One of the most important transmission services is a fluid exchange. Like an oil change, a transmission fluid exchange renews your transmission’s resistance to heat, friction, and corrosion. But more important than this is the fact that used transmission fluid can reveal potentially serious problems going on inside the transmission. For example, burned fluid can indicate that excessive mechanical grinding between gears is causing the heat inside the unit to rise above acceptable levels. Contaminated transmission fluid can indicate that materials from outside the unit have worked their way in, which can cause problems. However, contaminated transmission fluid usually means gears inside the unit are grinding and wearing each other down. The contamination in the fluid is actually metal dust from the gears. Finally, low fluid levels can also indicate that transmission fluid is either burning off or leaking out.
